British Values
Democracy
At Exeter Road, we are proud to promote leadership within our children and encourage children to have a say in what happens in our school and within the wider community. In order to become school team captains, or members of our school council, children take part in an election process where they are encouraged to present their speeches to their peers before a vote takes place. The School Council, which has representatives from each class, meet regularly to discuss ways to improve the school and raise money for our wider community.
Democracy is also promoted through PSHE lessons and assemblies where children are taught to respect their rights and those of others. Last year, during a residential trip to London, the children got to experience democracy, first-hand, with a visit to the Houses of Parliament.
Rule of law
In school, we recognise the importance of different rules whether these are rules we have here in school or outside, locally or globally. We learn how these rules are there to protect us and keep us safe.
Individual liberty
In our PSHE lessons or during assemblies, we appreciate how we have this value here in the UK, and how this isn't always true for all countries across our world. At Exeter Road, we empower the children to make choices throughout their school day.
Mutual respect
At Exeter Road, staff have high expectations of how the children should behave, following our values to: Be Ready, Be Respectful and Be safe. We pride ourselves on having a calm and welcoming atmosphere where we take time to get to know each child and value the contribution they make to our school. We welcome all visitors and new pupils, treating one another with respect.
Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs
Exeter Road is situated in an area which is culturally diverse. We celebrate the fact that a lot of our families originate from different cultures. In our RE lessons, we learn about different religions of the world; their beliefs, places of worship and festivals. We also learn about different societies and cultures through our Geography and History curriculum. Many of our whole school assemblies focus on current affairs.
